What is Veganism?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s first look into what being a vegan actually means. Basically, veganism is a lifestyle that involves forgoing animal-based products. Veganism is usually associated with a no-animal-product diet, but it also includes avoiding animal products in your daily life altogether. For example, if you’re a vegan, you can’t use items or materials that have leather, feathers or wool in them.

Veganism is different from vegetarianism in that vegetarians usually are not as strict with what they eat, as well as with what they can and cannot use. For example, while vegetarians can choose to eat eggs or dairy products, vegans choose not to. There’s plenty of reasons why people go vegan. These reasons include religious tradition and health issues, but the most common reason nowadays why people go vegan is because of personal choice. They simply do not want to partake in the suffering or the exploitation of animals.

Why Add More Vegan Options to Your Menu?

One of the biggest reasons why it’s a good idea to populate your restaurant menu with more vegan options is simply because veganism is a growing movement. In the United States alone, the number of people practicing veganism has grown from 1% of the population to 6%, or about 3.3 million to 20 million people in just 3 years. That’s a growth of 600%.

So, for every 100 people that go into your restaurant, that’s 6 of them you won’t be able to serve if you don’t have vegan options. That might not seem like much, but that number does add up. What’s more, it’s not just vegans that consume vegan options. 

Vegetarians also consume vegan food and comprise a much larger number of people. There may also be non-vegans who are curious about vegan food or are looking to try something new. Simply put, adding vegan food into your menu can increase the number of people you can serve. This can improve your restaurant’s menu optimization.

If nothing else, adding vegan food to your menu is great restaurant marketing. Although not as rare as they used to, vegan restaurants are still pretty uncommon. Uncommon enough that vegans and vegetarians will know which restaurants cater to their specific tastes. Once they know that yours is one of those restaurants, they’ll certainly prioritize your place over others.
