Simply put, food porn takes the idea of people “eating with their eyes first” to a whole new level. It’s used in modern marketing, especially restaurant marketing on social media due to how well it affects people’s urge to eat.

That’s a totally different subject. Food porn is a form of representing food in visual media. It is distinguished by how glamorized these visual representations are. The aim of these images is to look as good as possible, sometimes in exchange for realism. Food porn itself benefits a lot from food styling.

Food porn aims to stimulate our appetite using visual and audible media. It works similarly to how porn, the visual and audible version of sex, stimulates our sex drive better than how the prospect of having actual sex does.

The Rise of Food Porn in Social Media

Food porn itself has benefited a lot from social media. Thanks to how easy it is to share photos and videos online, food porn has become an irreplaceable part of how the restaurant industry does its marketing. Restaurant marketing on Instagram, for example, has become an affordable way to advertise your restaurant and the food you make. As a matter of fact, the tag #FoodPorn on Instagram has at least 122 million hits and growing. And this is with just one social media platform.

Why is food porn so effective? Well, think about it. What aspect of a restaurant’s marketing triggers your appetite better? The good reviews you see online, or glamorous photos of the dishes that they serve?

As a matter of fact, if you didn’t know the name of the restaurant, but have seen a photo or video of their food somewhere first, you’d probably put in a lot of effort to find that restaurant yourself. You probably wouldn’t even bother to look for reviews.

Add the fact that social media has turned everyone in our generation very visual people. Since social media has become popular in the last couple of decades or so, our brains have become hotwired to become highly reactive to imagery. Food porn itself is an industry built on taking advantage of our propensity to be swayed by images. Put those two together and you have a very effective marketing tool, and many restaurants know it.

With the recent generation not knowing a world outside of social media or the internet, food porn as an industry has nowhere else to go but up beyond 2020.
